Break-up fragments excitation and the freeze-out volume
We investigate, in microcanonical multifragmentation models, the influence of
the amount of energy dissipated in break-up fragments excitation on freeze-out
volume determination. Assuming a limiting temperature decreasing with nuclear
mass, we obtain for the Xe+Sn at 32 MeV/nucleon reaction [J. D. Frankland et
al., Nucl. Phys. A689, 905 (2001); A689, 940 (2001)] a freeze-out volume almost
half the one deduced using a constant limiting temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Kinetic energy spectra for fragments and break-up density in multifragmentation
We investigate the possibility, in nuclear fragmentation, to extract
information on nuclear density at break-up from fragment kinetic energy spectra
using a simultaneous scenario for fragment emission. The conclusions we derive
are different from the recently published results of Viola et al. [Phys. Rev.
Lett. 93, (2004), 132701] assuming a sequential fragment emission and claiming
that the experimentally observed decrease of peak centroids for kinetic energy
spectra of fragments with increasing bombarding energy is due to a monotonic

Stereocontrolled enantioselective total synthesis of the [2+2] quadrigemine alkaloids
Abstract A unified strategy for enantioselective total synthesis of all stereoisomers of the [2+2] family of quadrigemine alkaloids is reported. In this approach, two enantioselective intramolecular Heck reactions are carried out at the same time on precursors fashioned in four steps from either meso- or (+)-chimonanthine to form the two critical quaternary carbons of the peripheral cyclotryptamine rings of these products. Useful levels of catalyst control are realized in either desymmetrizing a meso precursor or controlling diastereoselectivity in elaborating C2-symmetric intermediates. None of the synthetic quadrigemines are identical with alkaloids isolated previously and referred to as quadrigemines A and E. In addition, we report improvements in our previous total syntheses of (+)- or (-)-quadrigemine C that shortened the synthetic sequence to 10 steps and provided these products in 2.2% overall yield from tryptamine
Advancement in the understanding of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei
Recent advancement on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase
transition for hot nuclei is reported. It concerns i) the influence of radial
collective energy on fragment partitions and the derivation of general
properties of partitions in presence of such a collective energy, ii) a better
knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on
all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of
the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment charge distribution for
fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows, for the first time, to

Quantum theory of damped harmonic oscillator
The exact solutions of the Schrödinger equation for damped harmonic oscillator with pulsating mass and modified Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian are evaluated. We also investigated the case of under-damped for the twomodels constructed and the results obtained in both cases do not violate Heisenberg uncertainty principle

This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.Neurons within the CA1 region of the hippocampus are co-activated during high frequency (100-250 Hz) sharp wave ripple (SWR) activity in a manner that likely drives synaptic plasticity and promotes memory consolidation. In this study we have used a transgenic mouse model of dementia (rTg4510 mice) which overexpresses a mutant form of tau protein, to examine the effects of tauopathy on hippocampal SWRs and associated neuronal firing. Tetrodes were used to record simultaneous extracellular action potentials and local field potentials from the dorsal CA1 pyramidal cell layer of 7-8 month old wild-type and rTg4510 mice at rest in their home cage. At this age point these mice exhibit neurofibrillary tangles, neurodegeneration and cognitive deficits. Epochs of sleep or quiet restfulness were characterised by minimal locomotor activity and a low theta/delta ratio in the local field potential power spectrum. SWRs detected off-line were significantly lower in amplitude and had an altered temporal structure in rTg4510 mice. Nevertheless, the average frequency profile and duration of the SWRs were relatively unaltered. Putative interneurons displayed significantly less temporal and phase locking to SWRs in rTg4510 mice, whilst putative pyramidal neurons showed increased temporal and phase locking to SWRs. These findings indicate there is reduced inhibitory control of hippocampal network events and points to a novel mechanism which may contribute to impairments in memory consolidation in this model of dementia. Bandit Models of Human Behavior: Reward Processing in Mental Disorders
Drawing an inspiration from behavioral studies of human decision making, we
propose here a general parametric framework for multi-armed bandit problem,
which extends the standard Thompson Sampling approach to incorporate reward
processing biases associated with several neurological and psychiatric
conditions, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases,
attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), addiction, and chronic pain.
We demonstrate empirically that the proposed parametric approach can often
outperform the baseline Thompson Sampling on a variety of datasets. Moreover,
from the behavioral modeling perspective, our parametric framework can be
viewed as a first step towards a unifying computational model capturing reward

Alpha-particle clustering in excited expanding self-conjugate nuclei
The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca + 12C
at 25 MeV/nucleon was used to produce alpha-emission sources. From a careful
selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from
comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, strong
indications in favour of -particle clustering in excited 16O, 20Ne and

Analytic Metaphysics versus Naturalized Metaphysics: The Relevance of Applied Ontology
The relevance of analytic metaphysics has come under criticism: Ladyman & Ross, for instance, have suggested do discontinue the field. French & McKenzie have argued in defense of analytic metaphysics that it develops tools that could turn out to be useful for philosophy of physics. In this article, we show first that this heuristic defense of metaphysics can be extended to the scientific field of applied ontology, which uses constructs from analytic metaphysics. Second, we elaborate on a parallel by French & McKenzie between mathematics and metaphysics to show that the whole field of analytic metaphysics, being useful not only for philosophy but also for science, should continue to exist as a largely autonomous field
